Purpose of PHA Program

The Peer Health Advisers (PHAs) are an on-campus group of student volunteers, who are supervised by HPPS staff and:

  • serve as contacts for students seeking support,
  • provide referral to UHS and other wellness-related campus resources,
  • stimulate awareness of and decrease stigma around health issues by implementing health promotion programs,
  • work to reduce disparities in health and wellness outcomes, and
  • help students to navigate UHS' services.

Program Expectations

All accepted PHAs will be expected to:

  • participate in 1 day of training in the Spring semester on Sunday, April 20, 2025 (11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.)
  • participate in 2 days of training during orientation, before the fall semester
  • complete self-paced/online training modules during the summer
  • attend bi-weekly large group meetings and continuing education sessions
  • attend regular residential college group planning meetings
  • facilitate PHA First Year Residential Education (FYRE) programs
  • participate in a specific intervention program (e.g., nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, sleep) 
  • participate in a committee group for 1 semester
  • offer monthly wellness chats
  • initiate group initiatives and implement health promotion programs
  • abide by the PHA Code of Conduct

Estimated weekly time commitment ranges from 2 - 5 hours. Example two week schedule below.

Prior knowledge or experience in a health-related field is not required for applicants.
