Modification to the SHP LOA extension benefit

Friday, June 10, 2022

Effective August 1, 2022, there will be a change in the way Leave of Absence (LOA) coverage1 under the Student Health Plan (SHP) will be administered. The change relates exclusively to the start date of LOA coverage, not to any other aspect of LOA coverage.   Currently, students enrolled in the SHP who are on an approved LOA are eligible to remain enrolled in SHP for six months (with the potential for subsequent additional 6-month periods) beginning on the day of their approved LOA. Effective August 1, 2022, instead of starting on the first day of their approved LOA, an LOA extension will start on August 1 or February 1. For example, if a student is approved for an LOA in October, the student will stay in an “active status” with the health plan until January 31. February 1 will begin the six-month extension period.

These changes will only impact students enrolled in SHP, and this change only applies to health insurance and no other university policy.

1LOA coverage under the SHP is only available to students who do not have access to comparable coverage.
