Student Health Plan (SHP) – Amendment to the Complementary Medicine Acupuncture Benefit

Thursday, March 07, 2019

As previously announced, as of March 1, 2019, Princeton University modified the Complementary Medicine benefits under the Student Health Plan (SHP).  The current SHP policy states the following:

Complementary medicine services received between September 1, 2018 - February 28, 2019 will reflect coverage limits and coinsurance for both Preferred Care (In-Network) and Non-Preferred Care (Out-of- Network) in accordance with the Student Health Plan’s previously published benefits.  If you have already accrued benefits that reach the new limits being put into effect on 3/1/2019, you will have no additional benefits available to you for the remainder of the plan year.

This memo serves to announce that the SHP Complementary Medicine acupuncture benefit is being amended as follows, effective March 1, 2019 through August 31, 2019.  We are introducing this amendment in response to feedback provided by students who access the SHP acupuncture benefit.  We are reviewing options so that we can continue to responsibly meet the needs of our students.

Complementary medicine services received between September 1, 2018 - February 28, 2019 will reflect coverage limits and coinsurance for both Preferred Care (In-Network) and Non-Preferred Care (Out-of-Network) in accordance with the Student Health Plan’s previously published benefits.

If you have already accrued benefits that reach the new limits being put into effect on 3/1/2019, you will have no additional benefits available to you for the remainder of the plan year with the exception of acupuncture services.  The Student Health Plan is amending the previous announcement and will cover a total of 30 visits for acupuncture services between 9/1/2018 through 8/31/2019, with a referral from UHS.

Students continuing with or beginning acupuncture services as of March 1, 2019 through August 31, 2019 with a Non-Preferred provider will have their claims processed at the previous 80% of the recognized charge for visits.
